Calke Abbey - Spring Preview

by ycopter | June 7, 2012 | (14) Posted in Projects

The National Trust has kindly given me permission to film within the extensive 600 acre grounds at Calke Abbey.  It really is a dream to fly through the ancient woodlands, formal gardens and around the historic house.

In return I am producing a promotional film for Calke.  This extract is taken from two adjacent flights and is 100% actual flight speed.  I have resisted the temptation to edit this too much, most of the footage is uncut which will hopefully give a good impression of the experience of flying through such a beautiful landscape.

Enjoy…

I use PowerDirector 10 to edit and on this video used a setting called "Video Enhancement". It sharpens the image and adds a little more saturation, but to be honest I usually don't enhance the video at all, the raw footage from the GoPro HD2 look great without any enhancement.

Correction, I didn't use any enhancement on this video, I used the "Video Enhancement" on the previous video "Tricopter Testing - HK KK V1 board".

Nice work =D

Were you using a GoPro for the FPV or did you use two cameras?

Thanks Huwy11.

I have used the GoPro live feed in the past and it works pretty well, but now I use a separate FPV camera and this is why:

1. The GoPro uses average exposure, so either they sky is clearly visible or the ground, but never both. I now use a camera with wide dynamic range (WDR) which exposes the sky and ground separately.

2. If using the GoPro case to protect the camera, you have to drill a hole in it for the video cable to pass through which makes the case non-waterproof!

3. The live output reduces the GoPro battery life quite a bit.

4. When the GoPro battery is exhausted the camera turns off and the FPV feed goes with it!

5. You don't have to have the GoPro onboard to fly FPV.
