The FT Old Fogey (Old Timer) is another scratch build foam board airplane designed with the swappable fuselage.



This is a 3 channel RC airplane with only elevator and rudder. Designed to be a fun, easy flyer.



The wing design features an under cambered polyhedral wing allowing the plane to flown practically hands off. 




When building your Old Fogey, you don't want too much polyhedral or your plane can 'dutch roll' (rock left and right.)



The Old Fogey foam board scratch build is comparable to the FT Flyer and Nutball planes in the swappable series. Great for easy outdoor flying and indoor flying.



This 'old timer' style plane offers a unique flying experience as well as a classic look.

Watch the newest Power Pod video to see the rubber band gear. Pair of bamboo sticks and rubber band instead of the plastic tie straps works perfect for hard landings, it has just enough "give" so nothing breaks. Use a piece of plastic gift card on the bottom of the fuselage to protect the foam from the metal landing gear and the plane will survive many landings.

Looks good for a noob like me who can't even get a nutball reliably airborne. It's getting cold, windy, and snowy here in the upper midwest and the $tree foam is stacking up. >>>Need Plans Now<<<

dqrc: I saw on another site that the writer thought that the nutball was a good first scratch build, but not a good first plane for a noob. I'm in the same boat as you but I haven't even tried to fly my nutball as I'm waiting for electronics to arrive.

Nut ball up. Nut ball down. Lather, rinse, repeat. Many props busted. Now building an underball http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1773325 pusher to protect the prop. As my building skills improve, I'll likely move to a more traditional trainer like the Old Fogey.

Can't build and can't fly but having a ton of fun learning both.

Excellent. I wish I'd bought a bulk order for foamboard when I first started my Nutball, as the cost is adding up for each model since. But don't stop the designs coming !

I built an Old Fogey and the weight is 1.125 pounds or 18 ounces or 510 grams. Is this too heavy? I had to add considerable weight in the front to get the center of gravity correct. It doesn't stay in the air, and I'm not sure if the problem is that it is too heavy or my prop is wrong (8-4.5)?

Make sure the numbers on your prop are facing forward. My Dad has been flying for over 50 years and he still does it and doesn't realize the mistake...

What is the weight of the plane? I have build one using your plans (with some modifications e,g, wheels) and it weighs 410 gms! I am curious how off my plane is from yours.

hi im planning to build this Old Fogey but im not sure if my electronic will work just fine. Here are my electronics.

Motor : EMAX 2812 (1534kv)
Prop: 7x4 / 7x5 / 6x4
ESC : 20A
Lipo : 850mah 3s

Im new to this hobby so please help me.

I've had my Old Fogey for 3 years and it's getting ragged around the edges. I use it as a trainer and general purpose flyer. It has suffered numerous crashes, bumps, mods, etc. This past weekend my grandson (he's 11) was here for a visit. The weather was windy (8 to 12 mph, gusty) but we went flying anyway. While crossing the field at around 150' up, we were hit with a strong gust and the wing folded. That ended the flying but it gave me some ideas for rebuilding the wing. I made the center section of the new wing 4" longer. I used a carbon fiber arrow (Walmart $4) as the wing spar. I cut 1"x 6" ailerons at each end of the center section connected to 9 gram servos (hot glued to the underside of the wing). I also reduced the dihedral of the wing tips by half. Wow what a difference, this thing flies amazing. At our Thursday afternoon flying session everyone had a turn flying it. This is a huge improvement. Give it a try, you will like it!
