Build a Red Bull Air Racer - Competition

by FliteTest | June 20, 2018 | (8) Posted in Projects

We challenge YOU to a competition: build a Red Bull inspired air racer with as much ingenuity as possible!

Competitions are always a fun way to see what our awesome community members can come up with when given a brief, some foam board and a deadline. Inspired by Red Bull's upcoming air race in Indianapolis and Flite Fest Ohio 2018, we decided to give you the challenge to build and fly a unique air racer.

It's no secret that an upcoming Flite Test kit will also be air race themed. Andres' new Edge 540 is an absolute beast of an airplane. It's capable of some stunning performance alongside incredible looks. It looks like Andres has knocked it out of the park once again.

Rules Of The Competition

A beautiful Red Bull themed Edge 540 aircraft (like Andres’s) would not be turned away from the competition but we are looking for more creative entries! We essentially want you to come up with something entirely original. Entries would answer questions such as:

- What would a Red Bull Air Racer look like in the golden age of aviation?  Think of those vintage planes of the 1930s.

 - What does the air racer of the future look like? What would a RedBull Space Race look like?

- How could you make an air race pylon fly?

- Could you 3D print an “invisible” or transparent air race model?

The more creative the design the better! However, those who document their process thoroughly with lots of video, images and written material will have an advantage over the competition.

How to enter:

1) Create something that flies with the theme “Red Bull Air Race”

2) Submit an article here on flitetest.com detailing your build process.

3) Include any photos and build plans and as many videos as possible - we want to see your project in detail so we can feature it on the show. Think of it like you’re making your own Flite Test episode. If you'd like an example, here is one.

4) Stop by FliteFest Ohio and showcase your creation with Red Bull! (Optional/will not affect your chances of winning)

Winners will be announced on or before August 15, 2018.

Insperation

As this competition is all about ingenuity and innovation, it's really all about making a design that stands out. Here's a model by Terry Dunn featured in a recent article that ticks this box.

We're also looking for some sweet aesthetics through decoration and color schemes that you come up with. To really make your plane stand out, think about how you can make it look as good as possible. Why not feature a brand new technique at the same time to inspire others? Here's an awesome looking FT 3D decked out to look like a Red Bull Edge 540. This is the sort of article we're looking for.

Whatever you come up with, we can't wait to see your creation and, hopefully, feature it on the show!
