As we know, drone power is supplied by the lipo battery, which can greatly impact the pilot’s experience. Everyone expects their drone can flight more time, but what parameters should be considered when you choosing the best drone battery? Therefore, that's why I write this article.
7 parameters should be considered
Capacity
Drone flight time is largely depended by battery capacity, more capacity is mean more power and more energy. Different drone size need different capacity battery, below is a matching table for you, it is for guidance only.

Weight
Normally, more capacity is mean more power and more energy. In fact As the battery gets larger, the increase in flight time becomes ineffective, because of the weight of battery. You should have to think about the weight when consider the capcity, Should not be absorbed in choosing bigger capacity battery simply.
Discharge Rate
Discharge Rate is yet another crucial aspect that need to be checked before you decide to settle for any battery for your drone.You need to get a battery whose C rating is convenient for your drone. You have to compare target c-rating and battery c-racing. In short, my principle is that battery c-racing is greater than target c-rating but not too higher.
Voltage
With a higher cell count, performance is maintained above par. However, higher cell counts translate to an increase in weight which, in some cases, affects performance. Choosing the right voltage of battery, you should reference in the datasheet of motor and esc.
Connectors
There are many common connectors include Deans, XT60, EC3 and JST etc .
What is the performance impact of these connectors? Below list tell you the max current rating of connector plug.
- JST connector – up to 5A
- XT60 connectors- up to 60 Amps
- Deans – up to 60 Amps
- EC3 connector – up to 60 Amps
- EC5 connector- up to 120 Amps
Brand
Tattu , Bonka, Multistar, Turnigy , Zippy , Graphene , SMC, Dronelabs, Ready MadeRC, ThunderPower, Floureon, Venom, Pulse , E-flite etc. Which one is the best one? All of them are good enough.
HV & smart & graphene battery?
HV mean high voltage battery, smart mean smart battery. Smart battery features: Self-balancing function, self-discharge function at high temperature storage,over temperature and low temperature alert function, over voltage and under voltage alert function.
The high voltage lipo battery is meaning 4.35v per cell, more power more energy. The smart battery can internally measure voltage and current, and deduce charge level and SoH (State of Health) parameters etc.
Graphene battery, graphene is an excellent conductor of heat and electricity and has interesting light absorption abilities. Turnigy graphene have done better in this regard.
Conclusion
Choosing the right drone battery is no doubt important, and looking after your lipo battery is also important. Don’t over charge and discharge your battery, you should not store a fully-charged battery for over 3 days etc.
