Flying Sleds Build Off!

by FliteTest | February 23, 2015 | (22) Posted in Challenges

Peter and Josh had a unique challenge from our very own Alex Zvada in this weeks episode!

If you guessed that they would be flying sleds, you guessed right!

With the guys hoping they work, the start building speed for take off.

And they work! Suprisingly they handle better then expected.

Josh enjoys doing some touch and goes while Peter trys a stall turn.

Peter makes it down in one piece, but Josh . . .

Well he tipped a wing and had to make the walk of shame.

Peter and Josh were frozen at this point, and well, Josh can no longer be understood.

With a victory under there wing, they walk off into the sunset.

This was amazing! I would like to see a smaller swappable based off Josh's gull wing design!

I want to make my own flying sled now! But in order to that, I need to be able to design it correctly! How do you guys at FT design all of your planes? Just thinking you could make that an episode in the future?

Cool idea. They both flew so well too. Very impressive. I think Josh's would have landed better with outrigger/ski-setups under the wings (like Peter had on his). They could have been a little short of the ground for the actual landing, but longer than the props to protect the motors/props when the plane slows down.

That was awesome !! What are the chances of building the F4U Corsair. I would love to see that in a speed build kit with a huge motor !!!

Awesome builds. Always thinking outside the box. For a gullwing design might I suggest the pacific ace sportster.

You guys have don it again, something way out of the box. A video on how you built them would be perfect.
Thanks for the great videos.

Charming episode, made me smile. I keep tabs on your weather with the BBC weather app, using Akron-Canton Regional Airport (?) and wow you're having it cold. Thanks for a great episode, wrap up... keep warm.

A thought on the summer version. I suspect these are very light. The sleds will probably float on water with the planes attached. Josh just needs to add sponsons under the wings. Peter needs to change out the skis for floats (I would carve them out of insulation board). Of course, both would need to waterproof the planes. This could be a lot of fun on a calm summer day. I don't think it would be too practical on a windy day because the chop would tend to swamp the sleds.

Enjoyed your video. Have noticed that article submissions seem to be down, am I right or are fewer of them published?

Make a plane that would be able to carry 125 lbs of potato or other heavy thing, but it would still fly like a trainer.

Flying is just that cool! I love hearing you guys laugh when you fly, it looks toally fun. Looking forward to my first scratch build. Still shopping for a 6ch transmitter. Leaning toward a Spektrum DX6i, but my flying trainer has a Tactic TTX650. i would like to use trainer mode with my friend as I learn to fly. I heard that the TTX 650 has a wireless one.
