franken-copter

Ok so as the title suggests, this is my franken-copter. This is my first tricopter, and my first scratch build.

I followed(roughly) David's V2.5 tricopter plans. But mine is entirely out of wood.

I cut the body by hand from three-ply 3mm thick... i wouldnt call it particle board, its close, but much stronger. The arms are 10mmx10mmx50cm.

The motors are Kv680s with 11x4.7 props.

Futaba 63003 servo.

Skywalker 20A speed controllers.

Re-flashed KK board(the guy i went to for all the rc specific parts actually gave me the board free, couldnt believe my luck).

Turnigy 2200Mah battery.

And the fun part... the entire thing is held together with zip ties, the hinge for the tail is also made of zip ties and is quite stable. If anyone wants to see more photos lemi know and ill put more up.

So the rear hinge was tons of fun to figure. the wood the motor is mounted on is epoxied to the sero head, then i put a large zip tie between the wood mount and the zpi ties as the pic showes. To keep it from expanding the middle tie holds it in the 8 shape.(it doesnt interfere since the gap is large enough) Then the two smaller ties on the arm are actuall not tightened all the way, but the larger ones between act as stops, im still modifying it.My largest concern was to keep directional preasure off the epoxy point, not so much the motor going backwards off the arm.

Ive now epoxied the tail hinge directly to the servo... The vibrations ended up being too much for it to stay on on its own. Now going to remove some of the zip ties on the tail.

I just bought a 1000 pack of zip ties, so clearly we're on the same page.
(Why buy 100, when you can have 1000 for ten times the price?)
Show that tail hinge up close, how'd you pull that off?

Indeed. Sadly they don't offer packs that large here in taiwan. but i cant complain about the price.

What kind of KK board is that. Is that the correct direction for mounting?

oh forgot, i was going to mention the front arm hinges. But in short, I just connected the hinge point and the stop point with two ties so as to spread out the load and so the holes wont blow out. But also to make sure the arms stay forward i put a big tie around the front support and looped smaller ties through it and around the arms. lemi know if you wana see pics of that.
