This week on the Flite Test Podcast, aviation writer Terry Dunn joins James for a chat about NASA and RC airplanes.
What was it like to be a contractor for NASA and work on the Space Shuttle program? What exactly is the process of designing a working asymmetrical airplane? Listen to this podcast to find out.
Terry at Tested
As mentioned in this weeks edition of the Flite Test Podcast, Terry writes articles for the website tested.com. Some of these are on subjects relating to his time at NASA such as this one about what it's like to wear a space suit.
Others are on broader subjects about aerospace and aviation like this one about strangely shaped cargo aircraft.
As Terry has a passion for all things RC, demonstrated by the podcast he and a few others produce called RC Roundtable, you can find a whole bank of content about Radio Control models on Tested. Check these out here.
Experimental RC Airplanes
One aircraft we mentioned on the podcast was Terry's Parallax model. This is a highly unique looking asymmetrical airplane design. Breaking all the rules when it comes to 'looking like it should fly', the Parallax works through a clever combination of force balancing and thrust lines. Here's an article that goes into way more depth on the subject. If you want to make your own, here's a link to Model Airplane Magazine's purchasable plans.
Also mentioned was the plane based on the box art of the movie 'Airplane'. This was made from a chuck glider and a pool noodle - ingenious!
