Hello FliteTest Community,
Both through FT STEM and MESArc, we have been receiving questions about how to setup and use the DXE transmitter and RX? I asked the kids about creating a video on the transmitter, and they agreed, for it will help them out as well in the future for bench testing and when they potientially purchase it. We are by no means experts, however, I think the video lends itself to do the job and to give guidance for those teachers and hobbyists using the transmitter at its basic settings.
The students were fortunate to have received these transmitters from Josh Bixler when he came to evaluate the Alpha Bravo Charlie, and we have never stopped using them for all student maidens.
Think of the DXE as a DX5 on steroids and the price point is still relatively the same. Spektrum took off the onboard working interface to transfer it and make it usable from your smart phone. Now don't get me wrong, I love the traditional onboard navigational screen and in any other situation that is what I would be using. Always having to use your phone for adjustments is kind of annoying.....
However....
In the situation most of us teachers are in, where resources are slim, the DXE gives us the same affects as a 200 plus transmitter for less then 100 dollars. If I have to operate a transmitter through my phone and have two to three of these for the price of one traditional radio, I am going to make that move. After flying hundreds of student planes, crashing one due to a faulty radio can make or break a students, and a teachers, experience in the hobby.
The other cool buy-in is from the students ability to save their model on the app using their own phone. Instead of saving models on a transmitter, the students can customize their own models throughout the year and share them with others, never worrying about your model being tampered with by the student before while conducting bench testing. This is always a problem in my class.
Lastly is the wireless buddy boxing capability that is a must for educators, I found this transmitter to work flawlessly and is easy to setup on the DXE. See 8:45 in episode.
Teachers, students, hobbyists, the DXE is a great option for you if you have less then 100 to spend and want a lot for your money. We love it!
Thank you for watching, reading, and supporting the program, we hope the video helps!

BUT you can't follow their guide on how to upgrade it, it doesn't work! Their guide tells you to download the Spektrum Updater program for your PC and use that to upgrade your transmitter. If you do that with the firmware file you download from their site, it won't work and will just give you an error.
Instead, you have to download the Spektrum PROGRAMMER software from their site and upgrade your transmitter that way! This will upgrade your transmitter from v1.3 to v1.6. HOWEVER, once you've upgraded from 1.3 to 1.6, you can't use the PC programmer software to change settings on your transmitter anymore. Instead, you can now use your iOS/Android phone to do so like they show in the video.
I ran into this problem with mine and Spektrum's site wasn't very helpful in finding a solution, so I definitely hope that this helps out anyone else having these weird problems!
