FT Mini Power Pod Build (Mighty Minis)

by FliteTest | November 5, 2014 | (35) Posted in How To

FTScratchBuild

This power pod is put together with one simple A-fold. If you are looking at the top end of the pod and thinking that our laser cutter may have been slightly off, don't you worry. That little angle is intentional.

This is the calculated thrust angle needed in order for the plane to fly true. This is the end you will mount the firewall on.

As always, simple packing tape is the best reinforcement. Plus, it's cheap!

After you lovingly gift wrap the firewall, remove the tape covering the mount holes.

For the electronics we use:

Motor: 2480kv 250 size

Prop: 5 x 3 minimum

ESC: 6 amp minimum

If you are looking for electronics packs you can pick them up at:

Lazer Toys: FT Mini Power Pod Electronics

Lastly, all you have to do is screw the motor onto the firewall and you're done!

Now what shall we put this into?

Why not check out our Mighty Minis!

for this thrust angle, which direction is the motor ment to be spinning? I wouldn't want to have it spin the wrong way and have it with this now crazy thrust angle

Hi, the motor should spin right (clockwise) if you look from a pilot's perspective ( in the cockpit)

But isn't that the wrong perspective?

Thrust angle is important with regards to rotation, but so is prop mounting nut, nut could possibly loosen.

Awesome projects. I saw a foam board Christen Eagle that was a simple glider. How about a FT Mini-Eagle? That'd be the bomb! :-)

Frustrating... what is the weight of the recommended motors ? I would think that not everyone has a heap of wantonly smashed up 250 quads just sitting about, I don't, and it seems to me that good quad motors are about 4x more expensive than standard HK motors like the minute one that I have purring brilliantly around the sky on my Bonsai. And while I am on a rant, could you PLEASE put basic dimensions (wing span etc.) onto your drawings and preferably line up marks as well so that tiles can be accurately put together.

I think this motor http://www.banggood.com/DYS-BE1806-2300KV-Brushless-Motor-2-3S-for-Mini-Multicopters-p-933192.html would be beastly on this plane!!! DYS are good quality for the price too!

When I went to order a motor they had CCW and CW options. Which is correct for an airplane? Looking from the front it's CCW but from behind the firewall is the pilot's position it's CW. I think the answer is CCW but since these motors are intended for the multi-rotor crowd I'm not 100% certain.

Seen as they're for multi rotors they are installed upwards. So you look down at their direction. And so you want CCW.

Can't u just swap two wires around if you want
It ccw and it is cw??

Lennart228 on October 19, 2015
Yes, but the ccw or cw Note is more about the prop adapter

What does 250 size mean??

Ultimate_Red on December 9, 2014
The size of the motor e.g. Park 250.

Does this require a receiver? I don't see where you mention one but in the electronics hookup video it requires one. If it does require a receiver, which one would you recommend? This is for the FT Mini Speedster.

You would use a receiver that matches your chosen transmitter. the Flite Test guys have done review videos on different transmitters in the past.

will gt2205/33 motor from the old delta, nutball, and flyer work with the minis ?

Why does the power pod have a angle on the front? Just for the minis.
It is probably some where on the site but I can not see it.

Its because of thrust vectoring. Its such a small plane that it needs the angle to counteract the torque of the motor.

Should I reverse the angle for a CW motor?

Downloaded the plans on the German triplane and I am going to scratch build it too see what I can do on my own. Problem is is there is nothing in those plans for the wood firewall and its dimensions. Can someone point me in the right direction with this? Also thanks for having the free plans because I'm on a budget and the fact that I can even just build a static or rubber band free flyer for 3 bucks is awesome. My son is 11 months now and I can't wait for him to get older and get him building planes as well and the fact that we can do it out of cheap foam board is amazing! Keep up the good work!

So do we only connect the two screws with the radial emaxxx? the firewall is def not lining up with the two top holes

Yeah, we're still stuck on what direction the prop is supposed to be spinning. I've had my plane nose dive and barrel roll randomly into the ground on numerous occasions to the point where it just isn't even fun anymore. Can you go either way and just change the angle? Or is it an unwritten law that all angles must be the same and only one way!? And "from the pilots perspective" is confusing as heck. Just a simple, "cw or ccw, looking front on" answer would help a lot. A real lot.
