P51-B Mustang build

by scottie | June 14, 2014 | (17) Posted in Projects

Theres no introduction needed for this plane, the P51 is iconic, here is my scratch built version.

BTW this is a big article :P

The painted one is mine, the other I built for my mate, paint scheme to be finalised but I think he is edging towards this paint scheme so should be quite cool :) .....

Anyway,I've already done an article prior to this one covering the story this far so onto the build as promised.

I build using a heavier and denser board from DTFB,I'm guessing from what I've read on the forums that its similar to Elmars FB.It's from Hobbycraft,5mm thick and is virtually impossible too remove the paper without destroying the board. It's far more robust and durable but it is considerably heavier.

The build pictures are from the painted version shown above, the white one,has already gone through some changes in the build method and it shows,it flies better than mine ....typical :(.

This was never going to be a swappable plane,I designed this to be more scale looking and too hold much larger motors including if wished ,doubling up the batteries. We've tested the white one with 2 x 2200mah 3s...it was interesting :).I've flown mine with 2 x 1800mah 3s much to my delight they both fly beautifully.

Being built as they are, cooling was a concern so where ever I could,I allowed for venting, the White one with the spinner off gives an incredible noise from a steep dive :) big smiles that day .

Fuselage

formers and battery box

fuselage sides and motor

assembled....

motor installation

battery hatch

doubler for wing seat

joining the 2...

tail

verticle stab and ruder, doubled of course ;)

elevator

fitted

servos,esc and wing mount

if you read the last article you will know I had a failure with the control snakes I used which resulted in a crash,I went back to a tried and tested method,a pushrod, only I used 3mm carbon rod with adjustable clevices.

rear turtle deck....lots of 50% cuts required too allow a smooth curve

front cowling again with the 50% cuts and some careful shaping

trusty pink insulation foam....I love that stuff :)

air scoop reinforcement

yep....pink foam :)

a couple shots of the white one with some modifications, mainly in the motor mount area too allow for additional cooling

I also added wooden reinforcement too the fuselage sides

sisters....

Wings

 main rib

removable servo mounts

 flap and aileron servo access

ready for paint

some in flight pictures.....and my buddy :)

and a couple of videos

So there you have it folks,my P51-B,about a year in the making but it was worth it,I'm quite rightly happy with her, they both fly beautifully altho mine has a slower roll rate than my mates but I can live with that,I'm just trying too enjoy flying her altho,a typical scratch builder that I am,I'm already planning my next build ;-) and further refinements too this bird.

Thats it from me for now folks, please rate and feel free too comment or ask any questions.

Cheers

Scottie

Wow, awesome article man. Your construction techniques are quite remarkable. The two planes look fantastic. I would love one my self. Makes me wish I'd started my vampire with these methods of building. :) Nice one.

Thanks James, appreciate that.Yeah the power pod does influence how your builds turn out but then We've already had that conversation :)

Hi Scottie, this project is awesome, would love to be able to make it. I live in Brazil, and believe it is difficult to buy the material design by internet. This project is available to buy? I would be very happy to make it by myself. In case that`s not possible, ok, no problem!
Congratulation...great work!!

Thanks everyone for your comments. This is a working progress and I do want to release the plans but I'm starting on my third build of this model and every one has been slightly different,so as soon as I have finalised the plans and build process I will share the plans.
Thanks again for your interest.

Very nice plane, everyone always does the D version. Glad to see a B version out there. Would love to see your final version and some plans. Thanks for sharing.

thanks Darth :)
Yep,the P51-D does seem to be the favourite but I do kinda like the B myself.I am still working on this, actually hoping to put another one together by this weekend for further modding and testing, guess it will just have to be a 'watch this space' for the final version .

I like the B version just as much as the D. I will definitely be watching for this one. Your planes look so scale and so refined, like the ones that are produced and sold. When I build one, I hope I can finish it half as well as you have. 5 stars and watching:)

Hi Scottie, just wondering how you are coming along with the refinements. Can't wait to get my hands on a set of plans. Every time I come back to this article, I get that much more excited. Patiently waiting.:)

Hi lordVader,I'm still working on this model I'm afraid.
I've been busy with work commitments lately and am just struggling too find time to finish this! that plus I've kinda started on a new project ;-)
I have however built another fuselage ,just need too build the wing, this plane just keeps
growing....its not that much bigger physically but it already dwarfs the FT Spitfire !
If this version fixes the GoG issues then I will hopefully be able to finalise plans and release them.
Thanks for your continued interest tho,
Scottie

No hurry Scottie, don't want to rush you any. I was just curious how you are coming along with the final/next version. I really like the B version and your rendition is awesome. I am curious about your next build too.:)

The trouble I'm having is putting the plans onto sketchup, this part is a learning curve for me.Normally I make models as I go along,so every one is always slightly different from the last.
The new project is a simpler build but made to the same design as the Mustang so I'm hoping to learn 'how' to finalise plans using this model 1st then it's the back to the Mustang ! :) as for your curiosity,it's a model I hope can be used as a trainer :) thats all I'm giving away for now :-P

Thanks,
The white one, from drawing plans on foamboard to what you see took roughly 30 / 40 hours.
