Skyhunter Scratch build with maiden flight.

by cableline01 | February 16, 2014 | (5) Posted in Projects

I saw the skyhunter and thought "I can make that" so this is the build process.. Enjoy :)

Flying FPV with a fatshark and mobius camera. I love this camera no sun flaring.. And so clear.

Plane was built will 1/2in wall foam from Home Depot and gorilla glue.

Found out that the foam has a grain to it so you can bend it one direction. here is a pic of the reduious.

Added 3 foam blocks so i could sape the nose how i wanted it.

Standard Gray paint had to a lot of lite coats so the foam would not burn.

First dry fit.

Put magnets in the top to hold the hatch down. Harbor fright had a pac of 10 for 2 bucks

The new motor runnign a 11x7 pusher prop

Installed landing gear.

Ready for the maiden flight.. So nervous....

Had to put 3 2200mah batteries in the very front to get the CG about 1/3 back on the wing.

Really great design! Thank you for sharing! I think a bit longer nose would help with the CG so that you could fly it with only one 2200 LiPo ;) What about the wing design? Do you have any plans or dimensions of your plane? Would maybe like to try!

Thanks, I like using the 3 2200mah batteries cause of the flight time about 30-45 min and sets the CG correct you dont want to fly to light cause it does not perform as well. I want to go to 2 5000mah batteries in it. As for the wing it is 2 dollar tree foam bent at the 50% long ways then added the ailerons and the spar is 3/4 in thick purple foam with a wooden dowel glued in front of it for more strength. Total of 3 9g servos for the control surfaces. the tail dowels are 1/2x800mm long. Very simple design. I tried to keep the cost as low as i could and get a good plane out of it.

GREAT job! There's nothing more fun than building from scratch, except of course a good flight like yours.

Thank you, I was so happy with how it flew. I can glide hands off with no problem. I just received the 4s 2200 batteries in today. Cant wait to try them out. I will have to post updates after I try the flight with more voltage... If you have any questions on the build please ask Ill be more than happy to answer

Awesome Job! How did you attach the booms and make them stable? To the Spar? and if so how?

They are in the wing all the way by the spar and just hot glued a lot they have not had a issue with movement. There is about 2 sticks of hot glue holding them to the wing.

Nice build! Ever thought of using old carbon or aluminum arrows for the tail booms?

Yes, I wanted to build the first one as cheap as possible and the version 2 will have more upgrades.
I think i will go with carbon in the wing and tail booms.

I would like to know more about this airfoil and wing, i'm assuming it's constant chord?
I'm wanting to build a long range FPV craft based roughly around the General Atomics RQ-9 Reaper, Wing Root Drela GW-19/GW-25 to the wing tip airfoil as Drela GW-27, wanting something in the neighborhood of 2-meters wingspan with quick detach wing and boom for storage.
