Turnigy 9x Mods

Some of you who follow the forums know that I fried my Turnigy 9x awhile ago. I had modified the original quite a bit so when the replacement arrived, I got to do all the modifications again.
This is not a "How To" article, but simply an overview of all the different modifications I performed on my Turnigy 9x.

1. Tx Module Conversion

When I ordered the replacement, I chose the model without a transmitter module as there was nothing wrong with the module on the original. To make the conversion easy, I cut the antenna cable to remove the module from the back of the 9x. I removed the transmitter hardware from the module case to desolder the cut cable.I removed the antenna from the 9x, cut the post so that it would fit onto the module. Next I attached the antenna to the module with InstaMorph. I was really surprised at how solid the join was.

2. Battery Mod

I had puchased a LiPo battery for the first 9x but it didn't have the correct plug. What it did have was a connector that would work, but you had to be careful which way you plugged it in. I neglected this once and fried couple of components on the motherboard. So before I used the LiPo on the nex 9x I was going to replace the offending power plug with a proper connector that would provide polarity protection.

The power plug on the 9x is the same as a 2s balance plug. So I orders some online. I tried to attach them to the LiPo using a pair of pliers, but I just couldn't get an adequate crimp. I bought a crimping tool from the HobbyKing USA warehouse for about $13 USD. It works great. It works as well as those that I saw for $40 or more.

3. LCD Backlight

These are really common on eBay, but they are only about $6 from HobbyKing. Of course they don't come with any sort of documentation. But there are several video on YouTube to show you how. It's easy. I bought Blue this time, but I think I actually like the Green better. I may have to swap with the old 9z.

4. Simulator / Trainer Mod

I like to use my 9x with my simulator, but in order to do this I either have to remove the transmitter module or perform this little modification. All you really do is cut a trace, and bridge the cut with a 1k ohm resister.

5. Programming Port

It seems that the most difficult part of this modification is sourcing the parts. Luckily, I'm an old computer geek and I have an ICD connector crimp tool. It's so much easier than soldering. I was able to find what I needed from Amazon.
I've referenced an article below that describes the process. Again, there are several videos on YouTube that will walk you through it. The hardest part for me was working up the nerve to take the Dremmel to the case to permanently mount the plug. I tacked the plug with CA and then used hot glue on the inside to reinforce it.

The picture below shows a 10 pin IDC connector. The nicest part of using these connectors is that there is no wire stripping or soldering. Just crimp it and go.

6. Flashing with OpenTX

I had upgraded my first 9x with ER9X and I liked it very much. OpenTX is the current version of the firmware. And it is also the firmware used on the FrSky Taranis.
Of course I'm going to have to re-learn how to set up everything, but that's part of the fun. Isn't it?

Now, I get to attempt to fix the fried 9x as well. If I'm successful, I'll post something about it.

If anyone needs more details about one or more of these modifications, I'll be happy to put something together.

Also, if you don't already frequent the forums, check it out. There is a great community of folks there.

Thanks

Hi,

on the latest firmware you don't need the resistor mode anymore, they have fixed it at software level, you need to set the mode to PPM-trainer something in the model menu

I wish I had known that. Oh well, it is easy enough to reverse. Thanks for the update.

Great writeup. As to reparing your old transmitter Bruce, from rcmodelreveiws, just made a video showing a new motherbaord for a 9x that he got from hobbyking for I think about $10, he had just made a video on repairing another one and then found the option for a new board and said that for the money it wasnt worth repairing the old board. Just thought you might want to check it out.

I saw that, but the board is for the 9xr. I read on the hobbyking forum that it won't work with the 9x. Regardless, I think I'll add it the next time I place an order from the Hong Kong warehouse. Even if it doesn't work, I can use it for parts, and it would still be cheaper than ordering from digi.
