Viewer Request Speed Challenge

Josh and David take on your request for a scratch build speed challenge!

David is flying a Spitfire, modified with it's wings chopped off.

David is using a huuuuge motor, the NTM 35-36A 1800Kv motor from Hobby King, with an 8 x 8 prop.


Josh is flying a new scratch build designed called the FT Versa Wing.


Both airplanes are equipped Airspeed Microsensors from Eagle Tree Systems. 
This Airspeed System features Pitot tube that records the actual airspeed and will record the fastest speed and display it on the led screen. The Spitfire David is flying is one that was featured in the Review Episode. In the background you can see the FT Versa wing and a few other wing setups that Josh will be testing out later.

The Spitfire is FAST! It's excited to see a scratch build plane maneuver so well at such speeds.


This speed challenge is a response to viewers requests to see David and Josh fly their fastest scratch built designs.

Time for the FT Versa wing to go up. After a few slow passes, Josh decided to attach David's Power Pod.

The Versa wing was fast as well! But it handled great!

The FT Versa Wing was designed to be fast but also to be versatile in how it can be setup.


It can be setup to be a pusher, or FPV plane, a combat plane and more!  Stay tuned for more on this wing!

There should have been a caveat for the fast speed without catastrophic structural failure. Great video, and very entertaining as usual!

And on top of that there is a project that I have been thinking about for a while, ever since i saw the 400mph model jet and the 400mph model glider on youtube. And this episode was the perfect time to tell you about it, since I will never have the resources in the forseeable future to complete this challenge, I present it to you.
My challenge, which I wish you to complete, is to build the first model plane to get to mach 1!

Probably only possible if it's more of a guided missile than a plane. And it would have to be launched from a plane that is already going fast. Also using gravity to help might be the only way to get even close to 700mph.

That was a nice episode! I wonder what airspeed Joshs' big fueled plane has. Perhaps you have a chance to attach that logger to that plane as well? I like the convetional "Spitfire" design more than the futuristic delta wing but that's only a personal taste. The last part was also great. Putting a foam plane nosedown into the ground with good speed showed less damage than expected by me. I thought it would disintegrate immediately. BTW: Is there a better way to put out an electrical lipo fire? The conventional approach didn't work too well. Is there some chemical (hopefully not poison) available that stops lipo fire?

A Purple-K fire extinguisher should take care of a LiPo fire...

Also, baking soda would probably work well to smoother the fire, but I'm not 100% sure on either of these, it is simply an educated guess...

Yep, they're their own fuel and oxidizer. I haven't had any fires...yet...but I pretty much figure if I do the best bet is to just have somewhere to let it safely burn itself out.

@thunder: Thanks for the link to the Puple K extinguisher - that looks promising. Perhaps it is a good idea to have that thing around at the airfield.
@Adventure rc @Jhitesma: Yes, that is exactly what I think, perhaps Thunders extinguisher is something to try out as well. Perhaps a bucket of Sand might help as well - so it will burn contained in a pile of sand.

I'd like to thank JOSH and CHAD for teaching me how to build foam planes ,keep the new designs coming. Maybe something in the size range between a supercub and a minicub using 5gr servos that would fly well outdoors or indoors.

Hey guys! I am building a scratch build of the FT Versa wing and my goal with this wing is to fly fast. I was wondering if you could share the setup used on the Versa wing to get the top speed. I know from the video that Josh swapped out power plants with David and that his setup used the NTM 35-36A 1800Kv motor from Hobby King but I was wondering what prop, speed controller and battery was used on the Versa wing to get the top speed. Anyone??

Your indicated airspeed needs to be corrected to true airspeed, to account for air density differences due to altitude, barometric pressure, and temperature. Based on your shorts and t-shirt attire, it looks like it was a warm day so I'm betting the true airspeed of the Spit was closer to 122.
