Hey guys, love the podcast. It's a great source of info for me as I learn the hobby. Any other good RC podcast suggestions? Wanted to contribute my crash story to the mix.

I got into RC by buying a P3A and after realizing how much I loved flying I bought my uncle's old Radian. It had been crashed many times and he said it wasn't flying straight because of the many glue jobs holding the fuselage together. So I went to the hobby shop and ordered a new fuselage. When it finally came I was SO excited to get it together and fly. My brother, also recently joining the hobby, has a Multiplex Easystar (I think that's what it's called) and so when the Radian was together we could hardly wait to go flying. Well, my brother thought he was pretty good, as he'd put four or five batteries through his plane and wanted to chase the Radian around with my phantom. So I pass the remote to him (I'd been flying decently, not well, but decent for my first battery I figure) and go to set up the phantom. I turn around 45 seconds later and somehow he mistakenly has the Radian flying INVERTED, 20 feet off the ground. He panicked and pulled up instead of down (I believe your quote from the podcast was 'when flying inverted: down is up and up is expensive'). So there's my brand new, shiny white Radian fuselage, covered in mud and busted into three pieces. Trying, poorly, to not show my extreme frustration, I went home and glued it back together and was flying the next morning. It doesn't look as bad as when I got it from my uncle but it's on it's way. Needless to say my little brother won't be flying my Radian anytime soon.

Totally agree on your comments with the mini tricopter. I tried it with 3S to "tame" it when I first started out, and you're right, it'll fly but it's very "mushy".

I fly mine with a 4S 1800, and I don't think I've ever made it through an entire battery without landing to work on stuff. I'd say I can get 10+ minutes, maybe 12 like you said, but it's so long I don't think I've ever run a pack down to empty. Nothing compared to the mini quads that get four minutes out of a 4S 1300. Absolutely a big part of that is that fact that you've only got three motors instead of four. When you consider that the quads have similar power trains, and therefore draw similar currents, you're only using 3/4 as much power with the tricopter, so your flight times will absolutely be longer.

When I got back into RC in 2013, it was with David's v2.5 tricopter (back when you bought his top and bottom plates and then made the whole rest of the tricopter yourself out of wood and DT750 motors with a steering assembly as the tilt mechanism). I flew it with a CC3D and a Pixhawk, neither of which were optimized for tricopters (but they worked). Now I'm using David's integrated Naze board with the beta fimware that Lauka is working on, and OMG, I don't know how I was every able to fly the thing with those other controllers. I threw my Pixhawk on my v3 "full-size" tricopter and even with the massively improved powertrain and using 4S and being a better pilot, that thing was nearly unflyable, and I went right back to the intergrate Naze and beta Triflight. Seriously, those guys have done some stellar work. I can't wait to see what Dave comes out with next.
