Project Bormatec Maja FPV

In continuity of our FPV stories, which we a telling on a local site, we want to share our new Project with you Flitetest and FPV fans.

Since everyone(from our club) knew the old scratch build trainer could not cope with our goals (maybe we ask for too much?), we decided to buy other plane. From the long list of planes peoples use for FPV we decided in favor of Maja from Frank Bormann, just because of it's specs:

    Wingspan - 220cm
    Length - 120cm
    Wight - 1.5kg
    Payload - 1.5kg

Parcel showed up in Customs but did not immediately passed, Customs officer were very waiting for us.. just because of curiosity and they just wanted to ask more questions about this plane.
After we brought it home, we immediately unpacked to see what it looks like, and then packed it back and put on the shelf.

Meantime we ordered some electronics for the plane:

2x Bluebird BMS761D servos (for aileron)
    1x Bluebird BMS705 + 1x Bluebird BMS706 (for rudder and elevator)
    2x 5000mAh 3S Turnigy LiPo
    1x 60A Turnigy Plush ESC

The parcel from China to our country is not so fast, like it is delivered personal by a Chinese who travels by foot, so we without any rush started to glue all the pieces together. We absolutely didn't like the glue which was suggested by manufacturer and choose to glue it with HotGlue (shame on us the FliteTest episode about Hotglue was not released yet. I broiled all my fingers :) )
For the servos we made special boxes. This decision was taken long before we decided which servos we will put in, however the decision was very clever one, because later on when we received the servos we identified that Bluebird BMS761D are not compatible with our DragonLink receiver.

Few days after we received missing electronics(new servos) aircraft was ready for the maiden.

The fact we were worried about was whether it is enough a Turnigy C3635 1300kv motor with a slow-flier propeller 11x4.7 as the plane weighted just over 2 kg. It turned out that the setup is more than enough.
First takeoff was almost straight up because I didn't know what to expect and pulled the elevator full down and throttle full up, but after takeoff it flew like an eagle on 50% throttle, and almost didn't need to be trimmed.

    <iframe src="http://player.vimeo.com/video/35467811?title=0&amp;byline=0&amp;portrait=0" width="400" height="300" frameborder="0" webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen></iframe>

After successful maiden and many other third person flights, were time to cram in all the FPV equipment.

It turned out with quite a lot of wiring which for a novice may be overkill.

This was followed by several FPV flights and a small crash - which was caused by the engine. I touched the coil with an bolt it [s]bitch[/s] burned in flight (lesson learned). Logger showed peaks right up to 80A. Because of the large load receiver rebooted several times, and of course there was no control. Also the motor wires were so hot that contacts were un-soldered directly in the air.

After the repair was done (very easy with some hote glue and new motor) we successful made some nice videos from the GoPro which was mounted on it.

Hello,
Thank you for sharing the winter video, I enjoyed watching it. Where is the landscape located? What soundtrack song did you use? Does your plane have built in flaps? Sorry for the questions and thanks. (Flightdeck)

Hi.
I'm from Moldova, a very small country from Europe. So, it is somewhere near Chisinau, Moldova.
The soundtrack was Mandalay - Beautiful.
No, the plane doesn't have flaps, she doesn't need them at all, but they can be made easily.
You don't have to sorry about questions.... better to ask once than never :)

Thanks

batteries and some electronic parts like receiver, vTx, elogger and others are sticked with Velcro. EagleTree sensors, like Airspeed, Altitude and Guardian are mounted on double side foam tape.
The OSDPro is free, however because of cables it can't move inside.

I got a tight budget but I could stretch it, how much would you give it away for? excluding the FPV gear is it a ARF, PNF or just a kit?

Could I ask why?
I search for a plane for areial mapping.

Well, first of all it is too expensive for what it is.
The second reason is that it is hard to balance with the motor so far in the tail. Distance between wing and horizontal stab makes it too sensible on pitch axis.
The foam is rough. It is not what are you expecting, hard to work with it with cutter.
The wings are too heavy for their length.
I have moded it a lot, and still not fly it very often. The next mod will be conversion to twin motor setup.
