The Flite Test Beginner Series is brought to you by Horizon Hobby

Episode 5: Flying your Plane
Now that you've had time to practice launching and landing your plane, it's time to take what you've learned and start flying your plane

Orientation

  • Practice turning left and right

  • Practice flying towards and away from yourself

  • Don't fly too far away

  • Don't hold the stick in one position for too long

Flight Envelope

  • Fly high

  • Check your stall speed

  • Check your oscillating stall and practice getting out

  • Practice gliding your plane - (so you know how it feels without the throttle)

  • Challenge yourself by flying squares, figure 8, etc.

Limitations and Technical Issues

  • Stay within range of your transmitter

  • Be careful of high-G maneuvers

  • Listen for weird sounds (broken prop, fluttering servo, etc.) land right away

  • As soon as your plane has decreased power land

  • If your plane goes down, look for distinguishing landmarks before looking away.

I enjoyed the video, great informative information for a beginner like myself! Just a bit off the subject, I also enjoyed the music, is it something that you all produced yourself?
Keep up the great work!

I am a couple of months into training and I upgraded to the Super Cub S2 with ailerons. So how about a video on how to combine rudder and ailerons for a smooth flight, and using the rudder to float the plane in for good landing with the wings level. If I use the ailerons the plane tips and want to cartwheel in. I have not installed the flaps yet, so how will that effect the landing flight path etc.

How do you keep a plane from crashing if it's hard to control? Can anybody tell me?

Great site guys.
After watching this series up to episode 4 I did get a plane. The Eflite sport cub S, I think I should have watched maybe episode 5 LOL. The plane did take off and crashed a few times. Learning a lot without much damage so all is well.. I live in the Midwest where it is now snowing so I went to the LHS where I know many from the sailboat club I belong to and they also do planes.. A lot of help. So back to the plane.. WATCH episode 5 before you fly.. The guy at the store suggested floats for the plane so I can land in the snow since the grass is covered.. I have yet to try it because of wind issues.

All in all you have the best site I have found for the new part of the hobby being planes. Once I learn and get off the beginner mode and transition to to a more advanced mode I will start to build a fleet.. The wife thinks I am crazy. ( well maybe YES) but I hope she will also become interested in it.. For her sailboats are slow. Motored oats just go in circles and the crawler is boring.. Maybe flight will take her to the next step.

Thanks for all the work you all do and the info you supply)

Great hints, and suggestions. Are they in a document any where. If we wanted to use these hints and tips for aviation education, this could be a great tool .

Please let me know what you think.
