DJI Osmo Pocket - A Pocket-Sized 3-Axis Gimbal?

DJI has unveiled their new OSMO, a stabilized camera for everyone.

The drone company we all know for their cutting-edge consumer drones like the Mavic, Spark and Phantom have long dominated the aerial photography scene. The obvious progression for DJI has been to branch out into the consumer ground-based photography market. Their new pocket-sized Osmo device looks set to take over this scene too. Watch out GoPro.

What Is It?

The Osmo Pocket is an extremely small, three-axis gimble and camera that smooths your video into buttery perfection. Like with their drones, they've effectively shrunk their previous generation of device down so that you can carry it anywhere, anytime. Imagine having a film crew in your pocket. It's certainly tantalizing.

So what does this all-in-one camera gimble pack into its 4-inch body? Well, the camera itself has a 1/2.3-inch sensor that records 12-mp photos and 4K video. This 4k can be shot in 60fps at 100Mbps - that's mighty impressive.

What Features Can You Expect?

ActiveTrack - With a tap of the finger, you can harness the power of DJI's signature object tracking technology.

FaceTrack - To keep someone in the middle of the frame, take the ActiveTrack to the next level by having the Osmo lock onto your subject's face (or your own).

Timelapse and Motionlapse - This feature gives you the ability to add an extra dynamic to your time-lapses with camera movement.

FPV Mode - This enables you to unlock the feature that locks the Osmo to the horizon. Instead, it allows you to point and shoot whichever way you want whilst smoothing your movements.

3x3 and 180° Panorama - For capturing wide-angle photos and panoramas with several different modes.

So what's our verdict? Well, this certainly seems like an interesting move from DJI who appear to have created a product for anyone. Thinking of it as an addition to a smartphone, this tiny camera could revolutionize the way we take video. Who needs the GoPro 7's inbuilt stabilization when you have a smaller and cheaper alternative in the form of a rugged 3-axis gimbal?
