Balsa in the wing didn't work to good for me either. Ply I think is a better solution. I just painted the downstairs of my house and I had some extra paint stirrers so I used one of them as my spar.
I had some spruce scraps laying around from my guitar building projects, so I used that. Hey, that's what they used in full-sized so why not! Log In to reply
I use plywood also and I find gorilla glue easy to use .The foaming won't show.Wet the spar slighty and then after inserting tack the wings to the fuse with hot glue.Setting the wings and the stabilizer on soup cans of egual size will help with alignment.Leave dry for a least 1 hr.Using a lined cutting board (sewing dept walmart) helps getting tail perpendicular to fuse. Plywood isn't a great option for a spar as half of the wood fibers are going the wrong way and thus are wasted weight and volume - not to mention the extra weight of the glue between the plies of wood. Plywood is handy because it is available in a variety of thicknesses but if you have a way to resize your wood, a knot-free section of scrap spruce 2x4 ripped and/or planed down to the size you need is really the best option.
