We use a lot of foam on this show and we will still say that it's the best, easiest, and cheapest material to work with when you are first getting into the hobby.
As time progresses you will become more and more confident in your building abilities and we hope that translates into designing as well!
If we had to recommend a step up from foam, balsa would be the pick. So how does a foam design made with balsa perform?
Luckily Hobby King took the initiative to create a balsa version of the FT Old Fogey called the Mariposa.
We went out to Furey Field to test them out together and pass the transmitter.
The characteristics are surprisingly similar. There are a few difference in design (wing tip angles, turtle deck, weight, etc.) that cause the Mariposa to waggle a bit.
In general, they fly just the same. Slow and easy.
Our passion here is to help people get to a point where they aren't just learning about the hobby, but actively creating and teaching others!
Being able to take a design and make it out of whatever material you're comfortable with is an invaluable tool.

This program will let you take any profile design and easily translate it into 3D space. From there you can print out plans or if you have a laser cutter, cut it out yourself!

As an example, Josh decided to take our FT Speedster and run it through DevFus to create this 10 foot monstrosity!
He made a test model out of foam, but if you are coming to Flite Fest 2015, you maybe able to see a balsa version (maybe!)
