Race Quad Tips - Fly Like Charpu

by FliteTest | March 11, 2015 | (14) Posted in Tips

While on a trip down to Florida, Josh and Alex had a chance to meet Charpu, a race quad pilot sponsored by Lumenier. Charpu shared some details about his quad setup and some of his flying techniques.

If you haven't heard of Charpu, check out his YouTube channel for some fast paced Quad flying. He has impressed us quite a bit with his skill as a pilot.

Charpu brought his QAV250 Quad along, showing off some of the custom parts he made himself and even his unique GoPro positioning.

Everything is moving so fast it feels like a video game! Charpu explains how he bumps the throttle for flips and rolls.

We've all had that moment, an on coming tree with no way out.

Luckily only the props were damaged and was a quick fix to get it back into the air.

Doing a few more laps, a squirrel is spotted running for cover!

It may seem like just a blur, but while demonstrating a backflip, Charpu bumps the throttle just a touch going into the flip to keep more altitude.

After a good run, it's easy to see why Charpu is starting to get noticed. He's a great pilot and an even better friend. To see more on Charpu, head over to his channel: here.

If you enjoyed watching Charpu and want to see other talented pilots, leave us a comment and we would love to fly with them. We wouldn't be where we are today without your support and we sincerely appreciate it! Until next time, see ya later!

Man I can't wait to start ripping around like that with my 250, just waiting on my fpv gear to get delivered!! You can only do so much los with such a small frame, it's a speck in no time! A fun move I've been practicing is flip to inverted then roll out....gotta be quick on the sticks but it looks sick!

Can you guys ask Charpu about his Naze32 config? PID-s, Expos etc?

Check out some of Charpu's youtube vids, he normally has a link to his pids in the description. He mentioned in the video he runs 60-65% expo through the naze settings.

I am just another newbie here, but from what I gather, PIDs are extremely personal setting for every quad and pilot, every change in the center of gravity or even change of the weight of the quad, battery C-rating ect. ... needs to reflect in a change of your PIDs, and that's only if your flying skills are sufficient to take advantage of the improvements. It is like driving a racing car if you are beginner pilot you will not be able to notice or take advantage of the better car.
Perhaps some more knowledgeable will iLumenier us :-) if I am right.

I know that PID-s are for specific build / flight style but it is nice to have some reference point.

If you check out his youtube channel, one of his videos has a link to the PIDs. It's a dropbox download.

Yes more vids like this one!
More Mulitrotor racing!.. 250s, tri, quads, everything!
I think it would be awesome if you guys did an episode where you all raced eachother. I know its a totally different type of flying, but that would be awesome. Set up a course and go for it!
Loved this episode! Charpu in the man!

I just went to the forum and clicked on videos for the first time. I was stunned by the shows posted there. I watched only two videos and both were absolutely fantastic. I though they would be boring but the video of the guy racing though the garage blew me away. Why didn't some one tell me about this?

Amazing skills. Quick question, i noticed that the transmitter (elevator) pitch is in the center position.
Does this mean the quad is aways in forwards flight or calibrated for forward flight?

this begs another question, would it be better to fly mode 1 instead with up and down on the right stick? Opps! better go to the forum.

I think he is flying in acro mode not auto leveling. He tilts the quad forward and centers the stick. The quad maintains that attitude until he changes it.

I would also like to know the answer to this question. (Newby here) It seems that center throttle stick "Altitude hold" for a lack of a better description would help a lot flying these quads at high speed, instead of constantly adjusting throttle to adjust height...Is this a setup thing on the fight controller...thankx in advance to the experienced guys...
