This is my aswer to the perfect flaps. they are split flaps that extend out, not just tilt down.
The build part:
You start by cutting allot of pieces out from a 2 millimeter hobbyply plate. You need a total of 18 pieces to make the hinges, then 6 square parts for the flaps surfaces. here is a template for all the pieces you need to cut out.
The rest of the build instruction will be pictures, as the do a better job at showing you what is going on.
So, we start here, all of the peices are cut out an a hole has been drilled through all of them, now the can be made into hinges.
As you can see in this next picture, the hinges have been assembled. the pieces are connected with a piece of piano wire to make the hinge. It has a 4 millimeter spacer undernieth as well to make everything the same height. they are then glued to the flap surface.
This is how it looks when put on my Transall 160 wing. This plane really needs flaps to land at a reasonable speed.
This is the second part of the flap, this peice will make the flap extend, rather then just tilting down. It is simply half the width of the flap. and has two pieces to make a simple flat Tape hinge.
So where do you put it? these pictures will show you just where to place it.
That is basically the finnished flap, This is how it works. The outer flap moves out and the smaller piece undernieth follows filling in the gap, making the flap extend to a 50 degree downward angle with a total of 50% more flap surface. that means a 50 procent increase in flap size. (same thing)
Now, how to make it wove.
This design requires to actions, on pull and one push. Basically, The big outer flap needs to be pushed backwards, and the little assisting flap needs to be pulled up, like a normal flat hinge flap. So, the control horn on the outerflap needs to be as close to the inner edge and as low as possible, that way you are pushing directly on the edge, you want as much throw as possible. The assisting flap undernieth has to have a normal control horn, with very little throw though. This is how it looks extended.
The aim is to make them move as close as possible to each other. putting more throw on the assisting lower flap will make it closer to the upper big flap, lower the opposite.
Hope you liked the article, be sure to leave a comment and rate insanly high, just cause why not :D
AAAAAAAAND, some more pictures of it.
Some comments ask for a video of it, this is for you, and everyone else, but still you!
