This video encapsulates the highlights of my best ever cloud experience flying FPV. This was several months ago now but I still love replaying it, as there were some amazing cloud formations that day. This was flown with my Zephyr II, Thomas LRS, with a 1.2Ghz 800mw vtx. I use a go pro as both flight and FPV camera, and use an RVOSD for instrumentation. 
 
Interestingly at the time I broke my distance record and went to 7.5km because the beautiful clouds kept pulling me along (my latest record is 18,070m).

Wow nice cloud dancing. I have a question about your camera setup, are you powering your gopro separately or running it from the internal battery? I'm getting my first gopro in a day or so and am wondering about powering it so it won't die while i'm in the air.

It is most definitely powered with 5v from the receiver. I did previously have the battery to flat hole flying losing picture on my easy star. It was only luck a friend spotted the plane at over a km away and guided me back! I don't want that to happen again ;)

Wow! What an amazing experience that must've been! Do you think that you might be able to make a quick video explaining your flight and fpv equipment and how you have it set up? It would really mean a lot probably for a lot of folks like me who are curious. Great job!

awesome man. yeah I think it would be sweet to learn how to use the gopro as both the fpv and flight camera as well as using only one battery for everything. anyways awesome video man! i cant stop watching it. 4.66 miles!!! thats insane! i cant wait to try that! i haven't ever done fpv. thats why im asking so many darn things from you hahaha. so far from all of the fpv I've seen, i like yours and flitetests the most. 4.6 miles. that still just doesn't sit right in my brain. did you have to use a stronger transmitter radio? or do the stock radios just go that far? i use spektrum.

My record with this same plane is 11.2 miles. If you want to get into FPV you will need to ditch Spektrum. It gets interfered with by the FPV equipment and will lockout at very short distances. Happened to me. I use the scherrer long range system for control. It is 433 MHz and this frequency is pretty standard for FPV these days. Flite test did a video comparing all of hedge long range systems, you should check it out. At 18km I still had an RSSI of 60% on hedge lowest power setting. It is a great piece of equipment. It simply plugs into your transmitter.

In terms of using one battery for all of the FPV systems and go pro, this is pretty easy as long as you understand what has to be powered by 12v and what has to be powered by 5v. This all depends on the different equipment you use. Many stores such as Readymaderc.com stock cables for the go pro that simply plug into a receiver channel and power the camera.

My best advice would be to start reading the FPV threads at either RCGroups.com or FPVlab.com. You can learn a lot there
