FMS recently came out with an absolutely huge new RC de Haviland Bever. With a two-meter (79-inch) wingspan, it dwarfs other models out there! This is truly one for lovers of larger RC aircraft who have the transport to get this thing to the flying field. When it's there, though, it won't disappoint. Let's start with how it looks.
Details
The FMS beaver looks great - it's as simple as that. It blends realism and style, with it's moulded panel lines and accurate replica engine to the visually appealing black and yellow paint scheme.
The FMS Beaver captures that character intrinsically linked to the real-life counterpart. It feels although it's from the same DNA. All you need to do is fly this model somewhere in the same Canadian mountains that made the de Haviland Beaver famous for mountainous exploration and daring adventure. By the way,you can also get floats for this model, just to go that extra mile.
To add to the realism, this FMS model includes five LED lights on the wings and tail so you can fly around at dusk. That sounds like fun! Talking of that - what's this plane like to fly?
Flight Performance
Josh flew the Beaver with Stefan and Alex at a local airfield which provided a nice smooth takeoff for the large bird. The 6s battery, providing over 5kg of thrust with the motor lifted the sub-4kg airplane into the air within a few feet.
'that's six cells of awesomeness' - Josh Bixler
Again, with that scale of power setup, whilst ensuring that the wing was flown responsibly, the Beaver was capable of some impressive moves.
Landing, however, didn't come as easily as the smooth take-off. All looked good at first, but a slight bump and roll ended in a small catastrophe.
The wing hits the ground.
The big bird flips onto its back. Whoops!
Within no time, the plane was back up in the air, albeit with a slightly dodgy wheel. The scale flaps definitely help with the short take off. This thing gets airborne in just a few feet.
Again, the six cells do produce a lot of power. Flat out, the Beaver can get up to some eye-watering speeds that, I would imagine, are somewhat faster than scale!
We have a problem! A touch and go results in a wheel popping off. Time to go around. There's always an opportunity for some RC drama here at Flite Test.
Well, at least the Beaver is down in only two, or maybe three pieces.
The FMS Beaver is clearly a very impressive model, yet it probably isn't the best option for someone fairly new to the hobby or someone without ample space to fly. The size also makes the plane difficult to transport, even if you have a huge truck. If none of these factors are a problem for you, go ahead and pick one up!
