Top 5 Advanced FT Planes

If you're ready for a challenge, perhaps you're ready to take on one of FT's more advanced models. Here are five of the most advanced planes in our store right now!

Note: In case you don't already know, all of our DIY airplane kits are designed to be beginner friendly and use common construction techniques. The aircraft featured in this article are considered advanced as they take slightly longer to build and/or provide a more intense flying experience.

1. FT Viggen

Personally one of my favourites, the Viggen was the first EDF design to come out of the Flite Test workshops. It was designed by David Windestål, everyone's favourite Swede. It has superb flying characteristics for an EDF being both docile at low speeds and stable and extremely quick at high speeds. With the right power setup, the Viggen can outperform many BNF planes in an aerial drag race. The Viggen is, therefore, the perfect introduction to the world of EDF jets.

Just don't try and put an EDF Afterburner in one. Seriously.

2. FT Sea Duck

The FT Sea Duck is the brainchild of Josh Bixler inspired by the popular show Duck Tails! This plane is a blast both on water and in the air. It has superb handling capabilities in both environments which the aircraft perfectly happy in the hands of an intermediate pilot. The build is quite intensive, which is the reason why it's on this list, but that shouldn't put any builder with three or four builds under their belt off attempting it - just be sure you have a set of consecutive evenings free!

The FT Sea Duck provides smiles all around.

3. FT X-29

Probably the most complex design on the FT Store, the X-29 is a NASA prototype inspired Flite Test EDF model. What's great, though, is that you can also run this plane off of a simple pusher prop setup. Some of the lines of this thing give it an almost space-age like appearance that will certainly turn some heads at the local flying field.  Imagine having one on your wall knowing that you put it together!

This thing is so quick on a 4s setup! Blink and you'll miss it.

4. FT Mig 3

https://store.flitetest.com/ft-mig-3/

As one of our newest warbirds, the FT Mig 3 stands out as an adaptable and very scale looking model. It features a removable top hatch for easy access to all of your electronics. In the future, new versions of older models such as the FT Spitfire and FT Mustang will have a similar system. Although intuitive to fly, like the Sea Duck, the build on this one might take you a little longer than some other FT designs. The final result is so worth it though!

5. FT Kraken

Release the Kraken! This monster of a foam board airplane is a 'happy accident' that occurred when Josh Bixler scaled-up a Versa Wing for an event way back in 2013. The giant wing is the perfect experimental platform. It's able to launch or drop other aircraft from it's 70" wing along with any experimental cargo you can think of. Landing gear also ensures you have an easy takeoff and landing.

Whichever plane you choose for your next project, be sure to share it with the FT community either here on flitetest.com, on the FT Forums or the Flite Test Fans Facebook page!

Has anyone ever pointed out that the Sea Duck is the plane from Tale Spin and not Duck Tales? flown by a bear. i don't think that style of plane ever appears in Duck Tales, unless they did a crossover i never saw.
